UP KEEPS THE LIGHT ON
A HUGE Thank you goes out to HOPE TOWN SCHOOL. Once again they will delight readers with their tales of Hope Town life illustrated with their fabulous artwork. This 2nd UP book was produced with amazing community spirit and in an effort to help us save our lighthouse! The children's creativity unfolds in a very cute yet fascinating story about a school-aged lizard and his adventures as the Keeper of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse! This is THE FIRST educational book geared for young readers to explain the inner workings of our lighthouse. Books are available in Hope Town at the Abaco Inn, Seaspray, and Hope Town Inn & Marina, in Man-O-War at Joe's Studio and at Iggy Biggy in Marsh Harbour. More retailers to follow as they are distributed.

RESTORATION
In January 2015 the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society was excited to begin implementing the restoration repairs set out the previous year by the late Cullen Chambers. Alex Klahm, of St. Petersburg FLA, a metal fabricator specializing in lighthouse preservation came to Hope Town and worked from Jan 24th - Feb 2nd to completely restore the roof canopy and gutter. Alex and his crew, which included Jackson Blatch of Marsh Harbour, also reconnected the lightning suppression system, replaced two of the metal shelf plates below the machinery room, fabricated and installed 2 new exterior ladders and worked to repair some of the slate flooring.
This was the Lighthouse Society's first major work project toward the complete restoration of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse - exciting stuff for Abaco and the Bahamas. We hope to set the precedent for other islands within the Bahamas that have lighthouses to do the same.
Commemorating 150 “Years of Keeping the Light On,” the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society in conjunction with the Port Department of Abaco, Ministry of Tourism, and the Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation, spearheaded a day of festivities in celebration of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse on June 24, 2014.
The Elbow Reef Lighthouse is perhaps the most recognizable landmark on Abaco as its candy-striped structure soars 120 feet above the high-water line. Worldwide, it is the last manually operated, kerosene-fueled lighthouse, and is manned by two lighthouse keepers: Jeffrey Forbes Jr. and Elvis Parker.
The second annual Elbow Reef Lighthouse Festival was held Tuesday, June 23, 2015. History, food, drinks and fun welcomed visitors to the historic Lighthouse grounds in Hope Town harbour.
